SignaLink Mode Comparison

This table compares the modes supported by the SignaLink USB and SignaLink SL-1+ to other sound card interfaces.  A typical multimode TNC is also shown for comparison.  For a comparison of features, please click here.

NOTE:  We have listed the most popular digital and voice modes below, but not all supported modes are shown because there are simply too many to list.  Both the SignaLink USB and SignaLink SL-1+  support virtually ALL available sound card Digital and Voice modes, so in general, any communication program that is designed to transmit and receive using a sound card should work just fine with the SignaLink.  If you are concerned about being able to operate a specific mode that is not listed, then please feel free to contact us and we'll do our best to confirm whether or not that mode is supported.  Thank you.

NOTES:

1.  SSTV is the only mode where you might frequently switch between digital operation (sending pictures) and voice operation (talking about that neat picture you just sent!).  If you plan on running SSTV, then we suggest that you connect the SignaLink to your radio's "Accessory" or "Data" jack, instead of the microphone jack. This will allow you to leave your microphone plugged in.  Some of these other sound card interfaces might also work with the Data and Accessory jacks (check with their manufacturer).

2.  The SignaLink and these other units support standard AFSK sound card RTTY, but not FSK RTTY.  Note that virtually ALL of today's digital modes use AFSK, so operating AFSK RTTY is not a problem. For more information on this, please see "Does the SignaLink USB Support FSK?" in our SignaLink USB FAQ.

3.  Software for transmitting and receiving Pactor 1 is available for the Linux Operating System only.  Receive Only software for Pactor is available for Windows.  This is an issue with all sound card interfaces regardless of manufacturer, and is due to Pactor's licensing requirements.

4.  The SignaLink can be connected to your radio's CW Key jack for direct keyed CW.  Some of these other sound card interfaces might also work with the Key jack (check with their manufacturer).  For more information on this, please see "How do I operate direct keyed CW with the SignaLink?" in our SignaLink USB Technical FAQ.
