ESP-96 Shown With Optional Built-in 9600 Baud Demodulator
The ESP-96 Signal Processor has been designed to integrate, into a single unit, most of the
critical hardware components required for direct satellite reception and decoding of 9600 baud
EMWIN
(Emergency Managers Weather Information Network) broadcasts. The ESP-96 employs surface mount
technology for ruggedness and high reliability. It is designed for continuous commercial service.
The ESP-96 provides the following features:
- Internal circuitry to provide direct powering of the LNA and Downconverter, without
the need for a separate "Bias-T" and regulated power supply. The ESP-96 can be configured
to provide a regulated and short-circuit protected source of +15 V DC through the coax, to power those
LNA/Downconverters that require it (such as the Wilmanco Model WWFD1690.6-137.1). For those
LNA/Downconverters that need a different voltage (or for those that do not accept power through the coax),
the +15 vdc power source can be disabled, allowing the existing external "Bias-T" and power source to be
used.
- High performance receive circuitry specifically designed for the reception of fast digital data.
The ESP-96 uses a high stability crystal oscillator for precise frequency control. The
bandpass filter is optimized for EMWIN frequencies and provides exceptional selectivity and attenuation of "out
of band" signals. The I.F. data filters are also optimized for EMWIN, and provide the best possible signal to the
demodulator.
- Built-in "Expanded Scale" tuning meter, provides high resolution monitoring of signal strength.
The tuning meter circuitry in the ESP-96 has been designed to display only the range of levels between
-50dbm and -90dbm (the average EMWIN signal is -75dbm). This makes the meter movement very sensitive over the
range of interest and does not display at all over the ranges that are of no concern. This feature allows the
meter to provide a highly accurate and effortless means of performing precision antenna alignment. Signal changes as
small as 1db can easily be seen!
- Optional built-in demodulator/descrambler with RS-232 output driver.
The NWX-96 9600 baud demodulator can be factory installed inside the ESP-96.
This option eliminates external decoder boxes and power supplies, and makes for a simple and reliable installation.
With the internal demodulator installed, the ESP-96 connects directly to the computer's serial port for the display
of EMWIN data.
- Buffered analog data port capable of driving up to ten additional demodulators.
This port provides a 600 ohm (unbalanced) output, which can eliminate the need for distribution amplifiers in many
multi-user installations.
- Extremely low power consumption provides extended operation from battery, solar or standby power
systems. The power consumption of the Signal Processor itself (no LNA) is approximately 35 milliamps.
Power consumption increases to as much as 500 milliamps when powering an LNA.
